SEASON OPENERS
Seattle University will be seeking its third consecutive season-opening win when the 2021-22 campaign begins Wednesday versus Alcorn State. The Redhawks won their 2020-21 season opener with an 84-72 victory over Portland on Nov. 25, 2020. The Redhawks won their 2019-20 season-opener in convincing fashion, 98-64, over Pacific Lutheran.

ABOUT THE SERIES VS ALCORN STATE
This marks the first all-time meeting between Seattle U and Alcorn State.

PRESEASON HONORS
Darrion Trammell was selected as the WAC Men's Basketball Preseason Player of the Year in a vote of the league's 13 head coaches. Also honored was Riley Grigsby, who joined Trammell on the Coaches' Preseason All-WAC First Team. Trammell earned a nod onto the Media Preseason All-WAC First Team.  Trammell and Grigsby were a one-two punch for Seattle U last season, finishing first and second in the WAC in scoring at 20.5 ppg and 17.8 ppg, respectively. Trammell ranked in the top 50 nationally in eight categories, including points per game (19th), assists per game (33rd) and steals per game (38th). He was a two-time WAC Player of the Week, All-WAC First Team, WAC All-Newcomer and NABC All-District First Team selection. Grigsby earned WAC Player of the Week once, was a Preseason All-WAC selection and earned Second Team All-WAC honors to close out the year. He led the team in scoring eight times, poured in 20+ points in four consecutive games midway through the year and was second on the team in made 3-pointers.

WAC PRESEASON POLLS
The Redhawks were picked sixth in the Preseason Coaches Poll and eighth in the Preseason Media Poll.

RETURNING CORE
The 2021-22 Redhawks return 13 total letterwinners, including all five starters from last year's team that went 12-11 overall and reached the WAC Tournament semifinals. The 13 letterwinners returning leads all teams in the WAC. Seattle U is one of two teams in the league to return all five starters. Tarleton State also returns it's starting five.

FAMILY TIES
New additions to the Redhawk team and staff have brought multiple family connections to the program. Cameron Tyson, a redshirt sophomore transfer from University of Houston, is joined by older brother D'Marques Tyson, who is an Assistant Coach on staff. Junior Riley Grigsby is joined by his father Al Grigsby, who is on staff as Assistant to the Head Coach.

CITY IN SYNC
The 2021-22 Seattle U squad features four players hailing from City College of San Francisco - Darrion Trammell, Nate Robinson, Emeka Udenyi and Kyree Brown. Trammell, Robinson and Udenyi joined the Redhawk squad for the 2020-21 season and Brown made it a foursome this year. The quartet let the 2019-20 CCSF Rams to a 30-0 season before the season was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

NETTLES FOR THREE
Aaron Nettles enters his final season as a Redhawk with 110 career three pointers. He sits just 19 three's shy of staking a claim in the Seattle U all-time top-10 list. Bernard Seals (2002-06) currently holds the No. 10 spot with 129 career triples.

REDHAWK RUNDOWN

  • Seattle U returns to the heart of Seattle with eight of its 19 home games to be contested in the brand new Climate Pledge Arena. The Redhawks played nine seasons under the roof of Climate Pledge Arena's former moniker - KeyArena - before the building went under construction following the 2017-18 season.
  • Seattle U returns 92.3% of its points from a season ago, the 18th most among all teams across the nation.
  • The Redhawks also rank 18th in returning minutes, as 89.7% of all minutes played a season ago were in the hands of the 13 letterwinners back on the team this winter.
  • Assistant Coach D'Marques Tyson has earned the distinction of being the youngest assistant coach in all of Division I men's basketball this season. The Bothell, Wash., native who played four seasons at the University of Portland, was born Dec. 18, 1995. He is one of two assistant coaches to be just 25 years of age to begin this season. Tyson is younger than Tyler Wilson of Manhattan College by just 15 days.
